Nursing care is a hotly debated topic in the public and in health policy. In Germany, 1.1 million people are currently employed in inpatient and outpatient nursing care for the elderly alone. Laws are being changed and passed, funds are being made available for personnel and future technologies and, above all, those affected are being listened to.

Challenge: Thanks to good living conditions, a large proportion of people enjoy good health into old age. However, the risk of serious illnesses or the need for care increases with age – and with it the number of people in need of care. About 3.4 million people in Germany currently require nursing care. The Federal Statistical Office is expecting the number of people in need of nursing care to increase to more than 4.5 million by 2050, with the degree of need for nursing care rising significantly.

Outlook: Rising numbers of people in need of nursing care, a professional group of skilled nursing staff and assistants who are already working at the limit of what is reasonable, further increases in costs and therefore in the remuneration for inpatient nursing care places. The average nursing place in western Germany is between 3,500-4,000 euros per month. In regions with a demonstrable lack of adequate home places, prices can vary by up to 50%. This situation requires action at all levels.
